NEW ORLEANS — The University of New Orleans baseball team has been on a tear lately and the Privateers (34-13) are getting some recognition.
UNO, ranked 29th in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, will take on No. 28 Tulane (32-14-1) at 6:30 p.m. today at Turchin Stadium.
UNO junior David Burch (2-1, 7.00 ERA) will make his first-ever start as a Privateer, and he will be matched up against Tulane sophomore Taylor Rogers (3-0, 3.42).
Burch claimed the save in UNO’s 4-2 win at Tulane on March 4, getting the final two outs and escaping a bases-loaded jam in the process.
TECH SET FOR GAMES: The Louisiana Tech baseball team will play a pair of non-conference games this week before taking the weekend off as they travel to UL-Lafayette today and Northwestern State on Wednesday night.
Tech (20-27) has faced both teams already this season, dropping a contest to ULL on March 11, 11-2, and defeating Northwestern State on April 23, 12-10.
LC PLAYER HONORED: For the second straight year, a Louisiana College baseball player has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Freshman of the Year. LC catcher Anthony Benoit (Baton Rouge, LA/St. Michael’s HS) follows 2007 ASC East Freshman of the Year Steven Davis to earn the 2008 honor.
ULM TO FACE FLORIDA ATLANTIC: After clinching a spot in the conference tournament for the first time since the 2002 season, the WarhawkS quest for its first title begins on Wednesday against defending tournament champion and second-seeded Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m. in Troy, Ala. in the first game of the Sun Belt Championship Tournament.
ULM (19-36, 9-15 Sun Belt) was swept in a close series against FAU (35-24, 17-7 Sun Belt).
CENTENARY PLAYER HONORED: The Summit League office has announced that Centenary’s Bonnie Matak has been named the conference’s Player of the Week for softball. It is the first such honor for the freshman in her young career and is the second time this season a Ladies player has received the award (Lauren Flowers).
NORTHWESTERN COACH RESIGNS: Northwestern State director of athletics Greg Burke is searching for a new head softball coach after the resignation Monday of Becky McMurtry.
