METAIRIE — New Orleans VooDoo defensive back Calvin Spears has been named the Arena Football League’s ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 63-24 win Friday night over the Cleveland Gladiators.
Spears, a Baton Rouge native who graduated from Istrouma High School, set a franchise single-game record with three interceptions and had six total tackles — five unassisted — in the easy victory.
Spears leads the AFL with five interceptions this season. All three of his picks Friday night came in the third quarter and in the red zone, helping the VooDoo shut out the Gladiators in the period.
The 24 points allowed by the VooDoo was the fewest in club history and the 39-point margin of victory was the largest in team history.
