NEW ORLEANS — It’s probably a game Southern University baseball coach Roger Cador would like to forget.
Cador’s Jaguars (0-5) remained winless on the season Wednesday afternoon after an error-filled 14-6 loss to No. 22 Tulane at Turchin Stadium.
“We stunk up the place,” said Cador, whose team walked seven batters, hit four more and had five errors. “Take away all those gifts and it’s a different game.”
Starter Seth Monaghan (0-1) gave up six earned runs on three hits in three innings. Monaghan walked six and hit a batter. He was the first of four Jaguars pitchers, who gave up 10 hits to the Green Wave (7-3).
“Our pitchers didn’t do anything,” Cador said. “We were not sharp.”
Cador, whose team returned from Los Angeles on Monday after playing in the Urban Invitational Baseball Tournament, said jet lag wasn’t an excuse for Wednesday’s play.
“We can’t make excuses,” Cador said. “Tulane just came back from (California) although they just played a game (Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to UNO),” he said.
“We just made errors. It wasn’t that they were overly aggressive. They’re (Tulane) a solid team, a Top 25 team.”
Tulane’s Aja Barto, Warren McFadden and Steve Moritz posted two hits each, and left-hander Matt Petiton (1-0) struck out six in six innings.
Sam Honeck had a three-run homer in the second inning, the first of four three-run innings for the Green Wave.
“We had 10 hits, not a ton of hits, but we drew some base on balls and had some quality at-bats,” Tulane coach Rick Jones said.
“They made five errors, but we had to put the ball in play for that to be the case.”
Leading 3-0 after two innings, the Green Wave plated three runs in the third on the strength of three walks, one hit batsman and singles by Barto and McFadden.
