NEW ORLEANS — Bryan Cryer tossed eight shutout innings and gave up just two hits to lead the UNO to a 4-2 win at Tulane on a cold Tuesday evening at Turchin Stadium.
Cryer, a Denham Springs native, struck out nine, including seven in the first three innings. David Burch got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth as UNO (7-2) won its seventh straight.
Joey Butler and Mark McGongile each had two hits and an RBI for the Privateers, who were held to six hits.
Rob Segedin went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Tulane (6-3), while Jonathan Garrett (1-1) got the loss.
HOUSTON 12, ULL 8: In Houston, the Cajuns took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but Houston scored 12 unanswered runs to earn the win.
ULL (3-6) was in line to snap its six-game losing streak to the Cougars (5-4) and seal its first victory at Houston since winning the 1999 NCAA Regional until the bullpen fell apart. The Cougars erased the Cajuns’ six-run lead with a three runs in the fifth and a seven-spot in the sixth.
ULL starter Buddy Glass did not factor into the final pitching decision as the senior allowed two runs on one hit in four innings.
Glass walked three, while striking out two. Luke Wagley was the loser for the Cajuns, allowing two runs in one-third of an inning.
In all, seven Cajuns relievers combined to allow 12 runs — nine earned — on 12 hits with just two strikeouts, facing 29 batters.
Houston’s Jimmy Raviele (1-1) earned his first victory of the season, allowing one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of middle relief. Bryan Tully earned his second save of the season.
Scott Hawkins extended his hitting streak to three games, going 3-for-4 with a career-high-tying four RBIs. Nolan Gisclair went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Four Cougars recorded at least two hits with Ryan Lormand leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance. Zac Presley drove in three runs.
NW STATE 3, CENTENARY 0: In Natchitoches, a pitching trio of Kyle Broughton, Ryan Campbell, and Tommy Rozell combined to throw a four-hit shutout.
