NEW ORLEANS — Junior right-hander Jonathan Garrett struck out five and junior second baseman Anthony Scelfo had two triples to power 18th-ranked Tulane to a 10-1 victory over No. 25 Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday night.
The victory in the new Greer Field at Turchin Stadium ran Tulane’s unbeaten mark to 5-0. ULL fell to 2-3.
Garrett (1-0) allowed only one hit in six innings — an infield single in the fourth — and did not walk a batter.
Scelfo’s two triples tied a Tulane single-game record and led the Green Wave’s 10-hit attack. At least eight players in the Tulane lineup had a hit.
Freshman third baseman Rob Segedin was 2-for-5 and joined Scelfo and junior centerfielder Aja Barto with two runs batted in.
John Zorich (0-1), the first of four ULL pitchers, allowed six hits and six runs and took the loss.
Pinch-hitter Travis Whipple had a double for the Cajuns, who avoided the shutout in the ninth when Cy Primeaux’s two-out single to left field scored Nolan Gisclair.
Tulane next faces Pepperdine in the Dairy Queen Invitational in Minneapolis.
The Cajuns host Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
TEXAS A&M 8, MCNEESE ST. 4: In College Station, Texas, Texas A&M starter Carson Middleton pitched five scoreless innings to key a win over McNeese State.
Middleton struck out five and allowed three hits and one walk as the Aggies (4-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings. The scoring began in the second with two runs, highlighted by triples by Brodie Greene and Jose Duran. Greene singled in the third inning, scoring Luke Anders and Brian Ruggiano to give A&M a 4-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Aggies added three runs on an RBI single by Dane Carter and a two-run single by Blake Stouffer.
Four Aggie pitchers relieved Middleton (1-0) to finish the game.
Starter Tyler Davis (0-2) got the loss for the Cowboys (0-5), allowing six earned runs on eight hits and three walks over 31/3 innings.
