Chelsea’s Café
Chelsea’s Café, 2857 Perkins Road, features off-the-beaten-path local, regional and national music. New Orleans’ aptly named Papa Grows Funk, North Carolina roots-rock perennials Southern Culture on the Skids, Florida sacred steel band the Lee Boys and comic-troubadour and Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman have played there.
The Varsity Theatre
With its 800-person capacity, The Varsity Theatre, 3353 Highland Road, is among the city’s largest clubs. Recent performances include Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen, rising modern-rock band Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and numerous tribute bands.
Boudreaux and Thibodeaux
Boudreaux and Thibodeaux, 214 Third St., recently presented Rosie Ledet and her Zydeco Playboys and second-generation blues man John Lee Hooker Jr. The venue presents many Cajun and zydeco groups but also new rock and country acts.
Hollywood Casino
Studio 7 at Hollywood Casino, another downtown-area music space, presents music on Fridays and Saturdays. Recent events include swamp-pop acts Charles Mann and T.K. Hulin, zydeco favorite Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie and Fats Domino tribute act Al “Lil’ Fats” Jackson.
Spanish Moon
Modern rock, hip-hop and dance nights dominate the Spanish Moon, located at 1109 Highland Road between LSU and downtown. National touring bands such as Isis and the Manchester Orchestra, as well as local and regional groups such as Brass Bed and Cohen and the Ghost, frequently play.
The Texas Club
The long-running Texas Club, 456 N. Donmoor Ave., presented country stars Jason Aldean and Randy Owen in recent months, as well as popular Louisiana group Wayne Toups and Zydecajun. The Texas Club is among Baton Rouge’s largest concert halls.
