Law enforcement agencies in East Baton Rouge Parish often rely on the public to report crimes and provide information that leads to arrests. Residents can call authorities to report suspicious activity or let them know what they might have seen or heard regarding a crime.

For those who want to remain anonymous, they can call Crime Stoppers of Baton Rouge at (225) 344-STOP. Working with law enforcement, this community program gathers tips that can be used to solve crimes. If the information provided by a resident leads to an arrest or an indictment, the person can receive a reward of up to $1,000.

Although making arrests after a crime has occurred is a major role of law enforcement agencies, those agencies also work to reduce crime by patrolling streets and providing crime-prevention counseling to the public.

On its Web site, http://brgov .com/DEPT/BRPD, the Baton Rouge Police Department suggests residents “stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings” for personal safety. Residents also should walk confidently, trust their instincts and be prepared.

Residents should find peaceful ways to settle disagreements and not support illegal activities the Web site says.

In addition to safety tips, the site provides answers to frequently asked questions about everything from alarm permits to curfew for teenagers.

Baton Rouge residents who want to view the incidences of crime in their neighborhoods can visit the department’s Crime Statistics page at http://brgov.com/DEPT/BRPD/csr. The statistics are not in real time but are compiled and categorized using standards set by the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

The cities of Baker and Zachary have their own police departments, as well as LSU and Southern University. And, there are several federal law enforcement agencies in Baton Rouge.

Louisiana State Police is headquartered in the capital city. The statewide law enforcement agency patrols the state’s highways and investigates criminal activity.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office also provides crime statistics on its Web site at http://www.ebrso.org.

Statistics based on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program are posted on the Web site, along with calls for service. Calls for service are calls made to the office’s dispatch center.

The calls for service are paired with maps that show the block where the alleged crime occurred. The data displayed is for the current month and is updated daily.

Residents can also find out where registered sex offenders live in East Baton Rouge Parish and view public bulletins posted by officials, the inmate list of people booked into Parish Prison and the office’s policies and procedures manual.
