BAKER — This city of roughly 14,000, between Baton Rouge and Zachary to the north, was incorporated on Dec. 27, 1944, by a proclamation of then-Gov. James H. Davis.

Government
Baker has its own city government, city court, utility system, fire and police departments, street department and school system.
Parks
The Greater Baton Rouge Zoo and the golf courses of J.S. Clark Memorial Park and Greenwood Park are adjacent to Baker city limits, and numerous other BREC parks are located throughout the city.
Feeding the community
The community offers a free meal, prepared by Chef John Folse’s staff and volunteers, each Wednesday at noon at First United Methodist Church.
Park with a famous start
The park adjacent to the Municipal Building includes playground equipment donated by entertainer Rosie O’Donnell’s foundation and a Veteran’s Plaza built with memorial donations.
Culture
The Baker Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, 1606 Main St., provides a glimpse of what life was like when Baker was a railroad town.
