PORT ALLEN — The West Baton Rouge Parish Library is a one-stop shop hosting a wide range of educational and community service events this summer.
The Baton Rouge Ballet Theater’s Junior Company will make an appearance at 10 .m. June 17, to perform “Adelaide.”
The production is said to feature “exquisite” scenery and costumes.
Among the performers are 20 talented dance students ages 10 to 14 who are being called on to exhibit the grace, energy and professionalism they have learned during two months of rigorous dance instruction.
The ballet was created by Susan Perlis, an instructor in LSU’s dance department.
The library also will host “The Greatest Little Zoo on Wheels,” at 10 a.m. June 24.
The traveling exhibit from Beaux Bridge will introduce audiences from preschoolers to adults in the ways of native and exotic animals.
On June 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the LSU and BREC Mars Van will be parked at the library to present a sky viewing program to the public.
The show will offer hands-on opportunities for all ages to explore the world beyond planet earth.
In addition to a summer’s worth of shows, the West Baton Rouge Parish Library also has taken on a community service role.
Visitors walking, running or driving along the curb-lined streets of the parish might notice a few of the bright-blue medallions marking 200 of the parish’s storm drains.
The markers are part of the “Take Out the Garbage and the Trash” environmental awareness project, the library is sponsoring.
Installing the medallions is part of an effort to raise awareness of the link between what is dumped down storm drains and what ends up in Louisiana’s bayous, rivers and lakes.
