Camellia Society sets roots in community
The Baton Rouge Camellia Society was established in 1970 by a group of residents who enjoyed growing camellias and wanted to share their experiences with others. It has grown from the original 20 members to more than 160.
Membership is open to anyone who shares the common interest of camellias. The group’s main purpose is educating interested growers and promoting the enjoyment of the flower, which blooms during winter months when most other blooming plants are dormant. The group sponsors a number of activities each year, each open to the public.
The group includes displays of tablescapes, featuring camellia themes and how they can be incorporated into table settings and home decoration. The society participated in the establishment of the Stone Memorial Camellia Collection at Burden Center. It also has established a partnership with the LSU Burden Center to grow camellia plants for sale to the public.
The society publishes a newsletter eight times a year, with society information, coming events and timely information on growing and caring for camellias. For more information, contact the society at 10522 Ferncliff Ave., Baton Rouge, LA, 70815, or aplandry@bellsouth.net.
