Enjoy herbs? Try joining the Herb Society of America, Baton Rouge Unit. Its mission is to promote the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research and community outreach.

The group begins meeting in July, and dues are less than $1 a week. In addition to local meetings, the society has yearly district and national meetings. This year it is celebrating its 75th year at its Annual Educational Conference and Meeting of the Members at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf from June 26-29 in Boston.

The benefits of membership include free entry to many gardens around the country and discounts on seeds, equipment, books and magazines.

The society has an herbal encyclopedia and cookbook.

The group’s herb of the year for 2008 is Calendula. It recommends growing herbs in Baton Rouge year-round.

The following regular monthly meetings are free, open to the public and held at the Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd., at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. There are plenty of herbs for sale at the meetings.

  • March 27: Landscape with HERBS
  • April 12: Plant sale, featuring herbs grown by Baton Rouge gardeners, including stevia and wolfberry.
  • April 24: Flower Power
Botanic Garden workdays offer the community a way to learn while helping on Mondays from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. and the third Saturday of each month from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring gloves and clippers. Seasoned volunteers will guide newcomers.
