Now is the perfect time to consider teeth whitening as a gift
A winning smile might be just what your new grad needs in preparing for the next stage in life.
Local dentist offices that offer teeth bleaching say it is a popular gift choice.
“Generally, parents will do it for kids around Christmas time,” said Buffy Robichaux, treatment coordinator for Dr. Chad LaCour D.D.S.
Shannon Foster, office manager for Dr. Thomas E. Foster and Associates Family Dentistry, said the procedure is popular for brides and college graduates who are going out into the business world.
Teeth-bleaching options vary, but the average cost is from $100 to $400.
Most bleaching treatments require that impressions be made of the teeth. Molds or teeth trays are created. Bleach is then applied in the trays and is pressed against the teeth where they must remain for a period of time – from several hours to overnight.
The Zoom procedure has become popular. It involves applying bleach solution to the teeth in combination with light from a lamp to accelerate the process. That usually takes about an hour to reach optimal color for most patients, and bleaching trays must be used at home following the procedure for maintenance.
Foster said the majority of the teeth-bleaching patients opt for the Zoom procedure since it only requires an hour.
Rene Dupre, a receptionist for Dr. Robert D. Westerman and Associates, said Zoom bleaching is available for patients who are 18 or older.
Robichaux said Dr. LaCour uses the Opalescence teeth-bleaching program, which is a long-term use program for $99. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Children’s Miracle Network. The Opalescence bleaching system can be used by patients who are 16 and older.
“Generally, we want the patient to be at least 16 so that we know the teeth are mature,” she said.
Foster said that before the teeth can be bleached, it’s recommended that the patient have an overall dental checkup.
“They’ll have better results if the teeth have been cleaned beforehand, and we can be sure there are no underlying dental problems,” she said.
