Moving from their parents’ house into an on-campus dorm room can be quite a change for aspiring college students — a change filled with both excitement and nervousness. After all, for most of them, it is the first time they have lived on their own.
There’s no denying that one of the best things about this state is the food. So, perhaps sharing some of this area’s tried-and-true recipes with a loved one this Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or graduation day might be the perfect gift. It’s one of the things that leads the news these days: money. With the economy on a downturn, people are keeping close tabs on their cash – and that is especially true when considering college tuition. What do you get the mom who has everything? Or the graduate, for that matter? This year, try something unique – something Mom has always secretly wanted. Giving a gift of a gym membership might be tricky. If it’s something the recipient wants or was thinking about, great. If it’s not, they might be insulted. But there is a good way to go about things and plenty of local establishments from which to choose. A winning smile might be just what your new grad needs in preparing for the next stage in life. Local dentist offices that offer teeth bleaching say it is a popular gift choice. Whether it’s through clubs, honors, organizations or simply excellence in the classroom, some students stand above and beyond their peers. As part of this year’s “Moms, Dads and Grads,” The Advocate is highlighting three graduating seniors who have stood out not only in the classroom but outside it as well.
