LAFAYETTE — Whether you prefer country Mardi Gras or parade pandemonium, Acadiana has a little something to throw your way today. Early birds who hunger for the traditional Mardi Gras courir — or run — can register for the Eunice Courir de Mardi Gras at 6 a.m. at the Northwest Community Center.
To those not familiar with Mardi Gras, it’s hard to explain all that merriment and mayhem that make up the Carnival season. What is it exactly? Is it the glamorous masked balls and upscale galas? Or the glittering parades that attract screaming crowds begging for plastic cups and beads? It’s a little bit of both, actually. Mardi Gras can be elitist or everyman, X-rated or family-friendly. But it’s always fun.
Mardi Gras madness almost consumes Louisiana this time of year. Partying and parade going is an art form here, and most residents know you don’t have to go to the big cities to have plenty of fun.
The Baton Rouge River Center was awash in pink the evening of Jan. 31 as the Society for the Preservation of Lagniappe in Louisiana hosted its 20th annual Spanish Town Mardi Gras Ball. Most Carnival balls require floor-length gowns and tuxedoes but not this one.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Sandy "Pepa" Denton got a lesson this week on how to toss beads and an up-close look at the elaborate float she'll be riding on in Monday's Krewe of Orpheus parade with friend and rap partner Cheryl "Salt" James. The women, stars of the 1980s rap group Salt-N-Pepa, brought their VH1 reality TV show to New Orleans this week to document their work helping a family rebuild after Hurricane Katrina, as well as their ride in the parade.
If anyone loves to prove that “bad taste is better than no taste at all,” it’s the organizers of the Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade. It’s a pink flamingo-ey fiesta that never fails to inspire smiles, laughter and a few gasps with an astonishing display of political incorrectness. This year will be no different as the 2008 parade kicks off at noon downtown on Saturday, Feb. 2, with the theme “Flamingeaux Phil Predicts.”
The Krewe of Artemis will not host its annual Mardi Gras parade this year, according to a statement issued by krewe spokeswoman Jennifer McCann.
State government is spending $661,906 to set up medical tents and bulk up emergency rooms during New Orleans’ Mardi Gras season. The money is in addition to the $10.5 million that will be spent to maintain the Louisiana National Guard’s presence in the city through midsummer.
Whether you are walking less than a block to your preferred Mardi Gras parade site or hiking across several parking lots to get to the best viewing position, Mardi Gras parade-watching can build up an appetite. It’s a good idea to bring along snacks to munch on in between rolling parades.
Leave it to Louisianians to look at waterways and see them as routes for Mardi Gras parades.
Finally, Jack got to be king for a day. The newly adopted beagle and terrier mix, once found abandoned in the backyard of his former home by a real estate agent, walked and wagged his way along North Boulevard downtown Sunday as King Jack, leader of Baton Rouge’s Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras parade.
CHALMETTE (AP) -- Hundreds of people braved the dreary weather Saturday to welcome home the Krewe of Gladiators - and mark another, modest milestone in this region's recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The krewe paraded through the New Orleans suburb of St. Bernard Parish for the first time since Hurricane Katrina ruined many of the houses and businesses along its traditional route nearly 2 1/2 years ago. This isn't the same community or same krewe.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Elizabeth Nelson ducked out of work early recently to indulge her new passion. The 45-year-old nurse-anesthetist headed to a Carnival supply store to buy another gross or two of long strings of plastic pearls - which she soon will throw away as eagerly as she bought them.
The Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade’s theme for 2007 was “Quit Flocking Around and Pink Your Own Theme,” a more-generic choice than usual for a parade that often has a political theme — such as last year’s “FEMAture Evacuation.” This year’s parade floats and paradegoers’ signs had endless wordplay on variations of the word “flock,” and the color pink, and of course the neighborhood’s symbolic pink flamingo was everywhere.
Over the years, the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade has built considerable popularity with its pink flamingo motif and its often ribald floats nominally designed around a single, smart-alecky theme.

Cajun/Creole dishes and hot jazz and zydeco can now be found coast to coast, but Louisiana’s biggest cultural export may be Mardi Gras. The zany festival with New Orleans roots has spread well beyond the state’s borders.
Immediately after last year’s Mystic Krewe of Mutts parade, Miguel Gomez decided he wanted to dress as a street cart vendor for the next parade. The Baton Rouge father of two waffled on that decision when he found a different suit on the Internet. “I decided I really wanted to be a hot dog,” he said.
Nearly a year and a half after Hurricane Katrina, a PBS documentary dares to ask “What Would America Be Like Without New Orleans?” “American Experience: New Orleans,” a two-hour program focusing on the distinctive city’s past and how it relates to its present, was born out of the devastating storm, its director, Stephen Ives, said Tuesday from Dallas.
Members of the Mystic Krewe of Mutts are expected to look particularly fetching in their costumes this weekend. The Carnival canines will unleash a healthy dose of fun that features a Mardi Gras parade, contests and a daylong Bark in the Park event on Sunday, Feb. 11.
