WBRZ keeps area informed, ready
Whether it be through its annual hurricane preparedness special “Weathering the Storm,” – which aired Friday on WBRZ Channel 2 – its visits to the community through its “Weather Road Show” or its telephone information hot line, the WBRZ Channel 2 weather team does its part to help the community prepare for storms.
The special will air again today at 4 p.m., Tuesday at 5 p.m., Thursday at 8 a.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. on Cox 19 and over the air on Channel 41.
After Baton Rouge’s run in with Hurricane Gustav last year, arguably the most damaging storm in the area to date, the information the team provides is more valuable now than ever.
This year the television broadcast covers all the bases, including segments from not only the weather team – chief forecaster Pat Shingleton, meteorologist Dave Nussbaum and weekend meteorologist Chris Stevens – but also from other reporters.
Nussbaum compares preparedness tips from this year to last and also visits the National Weather Service in Slidell to review its plans for this season, while Stevens reviews plans from the WBRZ Channel 2 Weather Center. In addition to the traditional hurricane tips, the show also digs deeper, delving into wind-profiling for hurricanes and research being conducted at LSU.
Stevens also provides a report on the Hurricane Hunters at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. – the only Department of Defense organization that flies into tropical storms to collect data for research.
Other reporters present updated information on Livingston Parish’s efforts to provide storm barriers, tax deductions that might be available for hurricane-related expenses, state disaster rescue plans and more.
When a storm approaches, the weather team uses all of its technology at hand to inform viewers, including its Live-True-View Doppler Radar.
From the Weather Center, the team is able to instantaneously alert viewers about all aspects of severe weather.
