Hurricane season starts on June 1. Here are some tips from various state agencies and the WBRZ/National Hurricane Survival Initiative.
What is the first thing I should do in case of an evacuation order?
When officials order an evacuation, don’t wait. Respond immediately. Drive safely. Traffic will be heavy. If you need a ride, try to go with a neighbor, friend or relative. Let others know when you leave and where you are going. Make arrangements for pets. Bring a list of emergency phone numbers.
How can I get information about hurricane evacuation routes?
The state is again offering hurricane evacuation and preparation maps. One is aimed at residents who live in southeast Louisiana, and the other is aimed at residents of southwest Louisiana.
Where can I get one?
Copies are available at local Red Cross and United Way agencies. Evacuation maps are also published in this guide.
Are hurricane evacuation routes the same as 2008?
Yes. However, the route has been extended farther into Mississippi.
What are some general suggestions for the start of hurricane season?
Store enough drinking water for at least two weeks. Find a place to store lawn furniture and other outdoor objects. Place valuable papers and photographs in a waterproof container and store them in a safe, dry spot. Have a disaster supplies kit.
What should a disaster kit include?
Water, nonperishable food, clothing and bedding and first-aid supplies. Nonperishable foods include fruits and vegetables, high-energy foods and canned juices.
