Hurricane season starts today. Here are some tips on commonly asked topics. Most of the information came from the Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness office.
Has the state’s hurricane preparedness advice changed since last year?
No.
How can I get information about hurricane evacuation routes?
The state is again offering hurricane evacuation and preparation maps. One is aimed at residents who live in southeast Louisiana and the other is aimed at residents of southwest Louisiana.
Where can I get one?
Copies are traditionally available at Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, Lowe’s and other stores. Evacuation maps are also published on Page 8.
Are hurricane evacuation routes the same as 2007?
Yes.
What are some general suggestions for the start of hurricane season?
Store enough drinking water for at least two weeks. Find a place to store lawn furniture and other outdoor objects. Place valuable papers and photographs in a waterproof container and store them in a safe, dry spot.
What else?
Have a disaster supplies kit.
What should the kit include?
At least a three-day supply of water, nonperishable canned food, clothing and bedding and first aid supplies.
How much of those items?
Allot one gallon of water per person per day. Nonperishable foods include fruits and vegetables, high-energy foods and canned juices.
What else?
For clothing, take one change of clothes and shoes per person, rain gear and sunglasses. First aid kits are needed for the home and each car. Tools should include flashlights, mess kits, tape, aluminum foil and battery-operated radio.
In case of evacuation, what papers should I take?
Driver’s license, Social Security card, proof of residence, insurance policies, birth and marriage certificates, stocks and bonds, wills and deeds.
What about home preparation in case of evacuation?
Unplug appliances. Turn off electricity, water, main electrical switch, propane tanks and main water valve. Unhook hoses.
What do I do if state or local governments issue a shelter in place order?
Go indoors, close all windows, turn off the air conditioner and ventilation fans and remain indoors until authorities say it is safe to return outdoors.
