Each year The Advocate and the WBRZ Channel 2 Weather Team bring readers and viewers complete information on what to do in the event of a hurricane in its “Before the Storm” guide.

The weather team – featuring meteorologists Dave Nussbaum and Chris Stevens and Chief Forecaster Pat Shingleton – also has several additional methods and outlets at its fingertips to get important information to the public in a timely manner.

From the Weather Center, the team is able to instantaneously alert viewers on Channel 2 about all aspects of severe weather including tornadic development, severe thunderstorms, flooding and hurricanes.

Technological advances enhance the team’s mission of preparing the public for potentially dangerous weather situations. The Live-True-View Doppler Radar provides a clear, accurate picture of approaching storms. Numerous WeatherNet sites provide immediate data such as wind speeds and rain totals.

The team also brings the only fully dedicated weather channel in the Baton Rouge area, cable Channel 18, which offers up-to-the minute information.

And, just recently, the team aired its hurricane special, “Weathering the Storm” on Channel 2.

Taking things further, the team frequently canvases the community by visiting companies, groups and organizations with its “Weather Road Show,” an educational presentation featuring safety recommendations.

Further enhancing community outreach is the relationship among the Weather Team, the news departments of The Advocate and WBRZ and the Digital Media staff at 2theadvocate.com. This range of resources – from television, print and the Internet – gives the team the best avenues to deliver the news.

To further enhance its weather commitment, the team recently met with the new director of The Hurricane Center in Miami, Bill Reid, representatives of the National Weather Service and Louisiana State Climatologist Barry Keim and members of his staff in preparation of the 2008 season.
