The pollsters did not rank LSU No. 1 before this game, but the Tigers got their attention by pounding the No. 9-ranked team.
Before the largest crowd to see Virginia Tech play, No. 2-ranked LSU won its home opener by smothering the Hokies 48-7, dominating from the start as if most of the Tiger Stadium record crowd of 92,739 were in on the act.
“I like what we did,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “I certainly understand it, but I’m not letting anybod7 bestow anything on us.”
LSU outgained Virginia Tech 598 yards to 149 in total offense.
The Tigers led 24-0 at halftime and scored on all four second-half possessions.
The computers ranked the Hokies No. 1 at the end of the season, but Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer had the Tigers at the top of his list.
Quotable
“Like I said going into this game, I’m not sure if this isn’t the No. 1 football team in the country.”
FRANK BEAMER, Virginia Tech coach
Play of the game
Keiland Williams, who ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns, gave LSU a 24-0 lead with 11:55 left in the first half on a play that looked shaky at first, but brought the crowd to its feet. He took an awkward-looking close-range pitchout from Flynn around right end and covered 67 yards in serpentine fashion. Williams hurdled his blocker, fullback Shawn Jordan, around his 40-yard line and shifted gears before winding his way into the end zone.
Game ball
To LSU wide receiver Brandon LaFell, who had a breakout performance for the Tigers. LaFell turned in career-highs in both catches and yardage against Virginia Tech, hauling in seven passes for 125 yards. His 56-yard catch in the first quarter provided an early glimpse of things to come on the night.
