Before the LSU Tigers lined up against Louisiana Tech, the door opened for LSU to dream of returning to the No. 1 ranking in major college football when the weekly polls came out Nov. 10.
Some less subjective dominoes also fell before the opening kickoff in Tiger Stadium, allowing LSU to clinch the lion’s share of the Southeastern Conference Western Division championship and a trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.
Then the No. 2-ranked Tigers went out and took care of the most urgent piece of business that was within their control, handling Louisiana Tech for a 58-10 LSU nonconference victory.
The victory featured the most points LSU has scored in a game in three seasons under coach Les Miles. And a temporary breather from the high drama of the 2007 season.
Quotable
“I don’t think it was an emotional game in any way.”
LES MILES, LSU coach
Play of the game
Jacob Hester electrified the homecoming crowd with an 87-yard touchdown run through the middle of Louisiana Tech’s defense for a 37-7 lead early in the second half. He rushed 11 times for a career-high 115 yards.
On his 87-yard touchdown run, Hester broke through a hole cleared by center Brett Helms, left guard Herman Johnson and left tackle Ciron Black, then was all alone down the middle of the field and into the south end zone.
Game ball
To the LSU running backs and offensive line. The Tigers ran the ball 40 times for a season-high 321 rushing yards, the most by an LSU team since Nov. 20, 2004, when the Tigers rushed for 360 yards.
