Somehow, it seemed fitting the last game in Tiger Stadium in this crazy, stress-inducing football season would be decided with no time on the clock.
Three overtimes after time ceased to matter except on the play clock, the Arkansas Razorbacks walked away with a 50-48 victory that left LSU fans, players and coaches stunned.
When Arkansas cornerback Matterral Richardson intercepted a two-point conversion pass intended for Demetrius Byrd in the end zone, ending the game, the Razorbacks spirited away a Southeastern Conference upset victory that spoiled the afternoon for 25 Tigers who participated in pregame Senior Day ceremonies.
A lack of execution doomed the Tigers on a series of plays. LSU coach Les Miles lamented missed opportunities, but credited the effort of the Tigers.
What could have been a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter for a No. 1-ranked team playing at its best was instead 6-0.
LSU still finished with a divisional title and a trip to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, where the Tigers didn’t fail to execute.
Quotable
“We always play good when we need to ... Sometimes it’s too late, though.”
RICHARD DICKSON, LSU tight end
Play of the game
LSU had a chance to take control of the game when quarterback Matt Flynn threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to running back Jacob Hester in the fourth quarter. But the play didn’t count because of a penalty.
Game ball
To Arkansas’ Darren McFadden. The junior, who went on to finish as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy for the second straight season, McFadden now has 4,485 career yards rushing. He moved past Auburn’s Bo Jackson (4,303 yards, 1982-85) into third place on the SEC list behind Georgia’s Herschel Walker (5,259 yards, 1980-82) and LSU’s Kevin Faulk (4,557 yards, 1995-98).
