NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On the verge of bagging the kind of win that can provide momentum for a season, Southern had breakdowns in every phase as Tennessee State rallied for a 34-32 win in the John Merritt Classic on Saturday night at LP Field.
Southern plans to have a short, walkthrough practice this morning and then leave for Nashville by bus around noon. Southern got in its usual light Sunday practice, but as for how the rest of the week plays out, that will be up to Hurricane Gustav. The ho-hum part of Southern’s substantial scrimmage Saturday morning was the first-stringers did well. The sizzle is in how freshmen Jerry Joseph and LaQuinton Evans keep coming on. Kendrick Smith set the tone for Southern’s scrimmage Saturday by taking a screen pass to the right, slipping between the blocks nicely set up ahead of him and speeding away for an 80-yard gain.
