NEW YORK (AP) -- The stock market suffered one of its worst days since the financial meltdown Monday, slicing 680 points off the Dow Jones industrial average as Wall Street snapped out of its daydream of a rally and once again faced the harsh reality of a recession.
CHICAGO (AP) -- Barack Obama announced a national security team Monday headed by Hillary Rodham Clinton, who fought him long and bitterly for the presidency, and Robert Gates, the man who has been running two wars for George W. Bush - striking choices by a president-elect who declared he wanted "strong personalities and strong opinions." There are some new developments concerning a multi-million dollar movie studio planned for Baton Rouge. Plans call for a $665 million studio to be built off O'Neal Lane, but new regulations mean less tax breaks for the project. GONZALES — Mayor Johnny Berthelot offered a good explanation for starting last week’s City Council meeting with a plastic ruler. “I packed up my gavel already,” he told the council members and others in attendance. Afterward, Berthelot went home and told his wife that they had to find the gavel. “I can’t use a ruler for my last meeting,” he said. Berthelot is proud that in more than 32 years in public office in Gonzales, he has never missed a meeting. WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007, the National Bureau of Economic Research said Monday. The NBER - a private, nonprofit research organization - said its group of academic economists who determine business cycles met and decided that the U.S. recession began last December. In Livingston Parish, an 84-year-old Tennessee man was killed Sunday morning when a train hit his van, Livingston Police Chief Randy Dufrene said. ALEXANDRIA — Authorities are investigating a one-vehicle crash that killed two people Saturday on U.S. 171, south of New Llano in Vernon Parish. Authorities arrested at least three people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 3 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, booking records show.
