In the Race to The Top, the Louisiana School Boards Association doesn’t even want to suit up for the game.
We hope that the association, and more so the board members and superintendents who advise it, reconsider this decision.
Now that the Dec. 15 deadline for its initial report is near, the state Legislature’s Commission on Streamlining Government promises to increase action this week. The commission’s ultimate goal is a report to be submitted Jan. 4. The report will be a road map for the next regular legislative session convening at noon March 29. A few years back, a popular movie was “Charlie Wilson’s War,” which chronicled successful efforts by a Texas congressman to help rebels in Afghanistan defeat Russian troops. Well, Louisiana, welcome to U.S. Rep. Charles “Charlie” Melancon’s War: A little more than a year ago, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden was basking in the glow of a primary re-election victory. In October 2008, Holden easily returned to office with 71 percent of the vote. But Holden’s enormous popularity was not enough to win voter approval of his “economic development” and infrastructure tax/bond package a few weeks later. |
