Letter: Landrieu criticized for debate vote
I am writing to express my profound disappointment and sadness over U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s support of the health-care bill.
I contacted her office just under a week ago and was assured by a very polite staffer that Sen. Landrieu would not support government money for abortions. The bill she voted to advance does just that.
She has also indicated that she would not support Medicare cuts to pay for health care. The bill she voted to advance does just that.
Additionally, her acceptance of funds “for Louisiana” in the health-care bill makes it look at least as if she changed her position for money.
It seems that Sen. Landrieu has exchanged the long-term interest of seniors and her moral position on abortion for a one-time payment.
I’m sure that her office will come up with some Washington doublespeak that will indicate that the above is not really true. But I am a simple person, and it looks to me as if she put politics first and people she represents last.
That is a sad thing for Louisiana.
