Our Views: Black Friday comes again
With the arrival of Thanksgiving today, Black Friday is not far behind.
The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, marks the official start of the holiday shopping season.
The tongue-in-cheek nickname comes from the hordes of shoppers who typically throng to stores offering deep discounts, bringing exhaustion to even the most ardent bargain hunters.
Black Friday sales promise to draw special attention this year as the nation struggles to recover from a recession. Friday’s sales could be an indicator of how the rest of the holiday shopping season will unfold. Holiday sales are critical to many retailers’ bottom line for the year.
In south Louisiana, where government depends to a significant degree on sales taxes, holiday sales also have the potential to affect the public sector.
We hope local merchants have a successful holiday shopping season, and we encourage local shoppers to be safe, alert and patient while on the hunt for the perfect gift.
