Our Views: A love story on the court
One of Washington’s love stories ended with the death at age 79 of John O’Connor, husband of the former justice of the Supreme Court.
Married after meeting at the Stanford Law School, John and Sandra Day O’Connor raised children and made their mark on the law in Arizona and later when Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed to the highest court in the land in 1981.
Her husband was a familiar figure around the court, and their strong relationship was admired in Washington.
Because of Alzheimer’s disease afflicting her husband, Justice O’Connor retired in 2005.
Their unusually strong bond was demonstrated in 2007 when it became known that John O’Connor had become romantically involved with a woman at the assisted-living facility where he stayed. The O’Connor’s son told reporters that his mother was happy that the situation had improved her husband’s state of mind.
Justice O’Connor is a strong advocate for research into Alzheimer’s.
She made history on the Supreme Court, but her marriage of more than 50 years was also a way in which O’Connor set a great example of grace and courage in the twilight of her husband’s life.
