Letter: Landrieu should back health reform
Right now, more Louisiana families than ever are struggling with high health-care costs.
According to recent Census data, over the past 10 years, health-insurance premiums for Louisiana families rose 2.7 times faster than median earnings.
Health-care premiums for families rose by 82.3 percent, while median earnings rose by only 30.4 percent. If nothing is done to reverse this trend, health insurance will become increasingly unaffordable for families in Louisiana.
As health-care costs skyrocket, Louisiana families are forced to dig into their savings to pay their medical bills. Even worse, there are more stories each day of people who are filing for bankruptcy because of medical costs — and many of them have insurance.
It’s time for U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., to support fixing America’s health-care system.
Under the proposals being considered in Congress, Americans can keep what they have if they like it, including their doctors and their health plan. For others without insurance, health reform will give them affordable options.
That’s a goal Sen. Mary Landrieu should support.
It’s time to stop playing politics and solve the health-care crisis. It’s time for our senior senator to support and vote for health reform.
