Letter: Return to one nation under God
Up until the 1950s, most American children yearned for adulthood. When their time came to be adults, they stepped into the role proudly, leaving childhood behind and taking up the mantles of responsibility, honor and dignity. We embraced and championed the ideals of those who came before us while valiantly tackling new ideas and problems that their families, communities and nation faced.
Those days have long gone. Americans now shun adulthood, preferring to remain in a state of perpetual adolescence. By failing to move forward with grace and dignity, a gaping hole in American society is left. We treat relationships like disposable lighters, tossing marriages away when they run out of gas. Children are left without families, and even worse, they are left without adults who could be role models of responsible behavior.
With this lack of willingness to step forward and embrace adulthood, our nation is losing sight of its core values and ideals. In their place we have morphed into an every-man-and-woman-and-child-for-himself mentality in which materialism has been placed before spirituality and submission to God. This lack of respect and lack of order in our society will be its death.
When my children were young, I frequently referred to them as heathens when they were particularly bad. It was my responsibility to take my heathens and make them into responsible adults. I believe I have somewhat succeeded.
We need to pray for one another as parents and grandparents to make our children and grandchildren into responsible adults who have spirituality and submission to God so our nation can once again be strong and be one nation under God.
