Our Views: Teaching well earns reward
A great honor but also a great surprise for a teacher is the Milken Educator Award.
Louisiana’s latest winner is Stephanie Judice of the Iberia Parish schools. The award, one of 53 across the nation, is not something a teacher applies for. Instead, outstanding teachers are sought out by the Milken Foundation.
Judice, now in her 12th year in the profession, teaches English and fine arts at New Iberia High and at Westgate High. She received a $25,000 cash award.
The Milken award is an honor for her superior performance in the classroom. The two institutions that trained her, LSU for undergraduate studies and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for her master’s degree, have a right to be proud of their graduate.
The Milken Foundation also promotes education quality at the grass-roots level through its System for Teacher and Student Advancement. The TAP program offers teachers multiple career paths and performance-based compensation. TAP was implemented in Louisiana in 2003-04, and this school year 41 schools statewide participate in the program, according to the state Department of Education.
We congratulate Judice and the universities that educated her. Louisiana benefits from her service.
