Our Views: Red Cross keeps busy
Despite a quiet hurricane season this year, the Louisiana Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross has been busy responding to the most common disaster it answers: household fires.
In one recent weekend alone, the local Red Cross responded to fires in the homes of six families from East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Livingston, Pointe Coupee and St. Helena parishes. The Red Cross provided emergency shelter, food, clothing, mental health services and comfort kits, which included personal hygiene items. Each child affected by the house fires also received stuffed Mickey Mouse animals for comfort.
As temperatures drop, the number of house fires tends to go up, so we’re not surprised by the heavy demand on Red Cross services lately. The seasonal trend underscores the urgency of fire prevention, and it also serves as a reminder that the Red Cross here and elsewhere does more than respond to large disasters such as storms and earthquakes.
