Letter: Give information before raising gas tax
I noticed in The Advocate (Oct. 29) that state Sen. Butch Gautreaux, D-Morgan City, stated the state of Louisiana should consider increasing the gasoline tax.
Before the Legislature does that, I think it should let the state’s taxpayers know how much of the gasoline tax is going toward operating the Department of Transportation and Development and not actually being applied to road and bridge needs.
Also, let the taxpayers know how many hundreds of millions of dollars in the state’s capital outlay bill and state operating budget are going toward nonstate projects.
After that, let the state taxpayers vote on whether or not they want to increase the state gasoline tax or any other tax.
