Letter: Tolerance and common sense

The letter to the editor, on Sept. 29, written by a self-professed lesbian Baton Rouge educator was a real eye-opener for me. Apparently educated people are leaving Baton Rouge in droves because of a lack of tolerance. I have to admit that I was unaware of this problem.

Apparently the Baton Rouge city government is, quote, “actively chasing educated people out of town.”

She stated that when the Metro Council rejected the One Baton Rouge proposal last year, it sent a clear message that gay people are not wanted in Baton Rouge. I guess one can safely assume then that all of these fleeing educated people are gay.

However, not all of the fleeing people are gay. Some of them are Irish.

You see, when the Metro Council rejected the One Baton Rouge proposal last year, it also sent the message that Irish people are not wanted in Baton Rouge. And I keenly feel the pain. There has been no proposal from the council clearly stating that Irish people ARE wanted.

Therefore, it is painfully obvious that Irish people are NOT wanted.

This is enough to drive away not only Irish citizens, such as myself, but anyone who is enlightened and tolerant enough to want to live in a place where open hostility toward the Irish is not officially sanctioned.

Ridiculous? Of course it is. The people of Baton Rouge don’t want a proposal embracing the Irish. And they don’t want a proposal embracing homosexuality. And the reason is simple. Most of the people of Baton Rouge are NOT Irish and most of the people of Baton Rouge are NOT homosexual. They are simply not willing to suspend common sense, reason and values in order to be considered “enlightened.”

We are living in a country that seems to have lost its moral compass and mindlessly embraces anything that is different. While tolerance certainly can be a good thing, there has to be a sense of where the lines are to be drawn.

Perhaps the good people of Baton Rouge are simply drawing the line.
