Our View: New chapter for Johnson
In “Poor Man’s Provence,” the most recent title in Baton Rouge’s One Book/One Community program, local readers learned of Rheta Grimsley Johnson’s experiences as a part-time resident of Henderson, the small Cajun community near Lafayette.
Johnson, whose primary home is in rural Mississippi, writes a syndicated column about life in the South. The book, like her column, is full of lively and often funny prose about local characters. Its setting in Cajun Louisiana made it a particular treat for Baton Rouge’s One Book/One Community program, in which residents are encouraged to read and share the same book. The idea is to promote reading and civic togetherness.
We remember with fondness Johnson’s recent speech last month in Baton Rouge in which she affectionately recounted her life in Henderson — a series of good times recently darkened by the death of her husband, Don, a frequent presence in “Poor Man’s Provence.”
Losing a spouse can bring many changes to one’s life, so we weren’t surprised to learn in one of Johnson’s latest columns about the sale of her part-time home in Henderson.
“To say I’ll miss this place is to say Jimmie Rodgers could yodel. An understatement,” Johnson told readers. “I’ll miss it all.”
We’re also wistful about Johnson’s departure from the yellow Cajun cottage that was so central to “Poor Man’s Provence.” But we hope Johnson won’t be a stranger in this part of the world.
