Our Views: France thanks La. veterans
When 38 World War II veterans gathered in France recently to receive the Legion of Honor, three Louisiana men were among those honored.
John Witmeyer, of Harahan, Lee Bernard, of Erath, and Martin Richard, of Metairie, received the honor as part of ceremonies marking the 65th anniversary of D-Day. The June 6, 1944, Allied invasion of France cost many lives, but it marked the beginning of the end of Nazi tyranny across Europe.
The Legion of Honor is the highest honor France can bestow, and it recognizes eminent service to the French republic.
The number of living World War II veterans is dwindling dramatically. We’re glad these three Louisiana veterans are still around, and that they were able to make a return trip to a grateful France they helped liberate the better part of a lifetime ago.
