Letter: Vitter is an embarrassment to state
Recently U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., broke with his Republican colleagues and became the lone member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to vote against Sen. Hillary Clinton as the next secretary of state.
Vitter’s nay vote may have been an attempt to shore up right-wing support. Or there may have been some other cynical reason. Clinton’s qualifications were clearly not the reason, as she is imminently qualified.
Maybe Vitter’s lone vote was a diversionary stunt intended to place space between his sordid past. Unfortunately for Vitter, and Louisiana, that effort was futile. Every Vitter sighting or story brings a media reminder of his transgressions. We are rightly and repeatedly reminded of his rank hypocrisy; preaching family values while practicing something else.
No one cares what Vitter does in his private life. But Vitter’s hypocrisy is relevant.
On these issues Vitter has stonewalled the press and public alike, showing the people of Louisiana the same respect he has shown his family.
By his conduct, Vitter has rendered himself totally ineffective and an embarrassment to our state.
If he had any respect for himself, or the state of Louisiana, he would have resigned yesterday.
