Letter: Vote to shift funds to local roads
In my new position as executive director of the Concrete and Aggregates Association of Louisiana I have had the opportunity to learn about our infrastructure needs all across the state. And the need is great, but resources are very tight especially for local governments.
Instead of depending upon gas taxes to support our roads, proposed constitutional Amendment No. 4 provides our local governments a solid revenue source to improve local transportation. In order to keep from raising taxes for local roads, I suggest voting in favor of Amendment No. 4.
In my more than 20 years of working on behalf of taxpayers, I have come to realize that most of the time the money spent by local government is usually more efficient than what is spent at the state level and certainly more efficient than at the federal level.
Constitutional Amendment No. 4 reallocates more of a current tax to local governments, of which 50 percent (of the new money) must be used for local roads. It is always easier to hold your local officials more accountable than state or federal officials.
I suggest to you that a vote for Amendment No. 4 gives taxpayers more of their tax money to improve local roads, creating opportunity for increased fuel efficiencies and less time stuck in traffic as long as our local officials spend this money wisely.
