Our Views: No holiday from politics
The thrill of victory was sweet for Mayor-President Kip Holden, who led the ballot in East Baton Rouge Parish and won a thumping re-election over three opponents. And while other winners celebrated and losers fielded condolence calls, politics by no means takes off for a holiday.
The Nov. 4 general election is only weeks away and presidential, U.S. Senate and U.S. House races are on the ballot, as well as runoffs for eight Metro Council seats.
Among closely watched races in the state, the struggle for survival by U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, will be an epic. The long-time incumbent — indicted for corruption by federal prosecutors — must struggle to hold his seat Nov. 4 against former television reporter Helen Moreno. The winner of that Democratic primary runoff will face only nominal opposition Dec. 6.
Congratulations to the winners but voters must now start paying attention to the very important races on the Nov. 4 ballot.
