Letter: Jackson says he’s running to win

Yesterday’s editorial cartoon inappropriately suggested that my role in the 6th District congressional race is to give Republicans the upper hand.

Let me be clear: I am in this race to win.

Earlier this year, 90 percent of African Americans and nearly 20 percent of white Democrats in the 6th District supported my candidacy, giving me 43 percent of the overall votes in the Democratic primary. Recognizing these percentages and the unprecedented turnout that is expected in support of Sen. Barack Obama’s bid for the presidency, and the fact that the winner only needs a plurality, not a majority, it’s clear that we can win.

But it is not just the numbers that give me hope and confidence. It’s the people. On Nov. 4, I have no doubt that thousands of voters will go to the polls and vote for change.

Many are tired of the political bickering and meaningless rhetoric that echoes loudly from Capitol Hill, but rings hollow here at home. Given the financial crisis on Wall Street, skyrocketing gas prices and the fact that hardworking families are constantly struggling to pay their bills every month, it’s no wonder that voters are seeking change in this election.

Many are looking for bold, new leadership — for someone who is not controlled by the national parties or defined exclusively as a “D” or an “R,” but as a statesman.

I will work with people throughout the 6th Congressional District to truly bring change to Washington.

State Rep. Michael Jackson
