Letter: Businessman for pro-union bill

I am a small-business owner who has firsthand experience operating a unionized company.

I have lived in Baton Rouge and served clientele all over the Baton Rouge area, and let me tell you, other business owners do not speak for me when they oppose the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation that would make it easier for workers to form unions.

As a business owner, I know the best way to make sure my associates have true security for their families is to respect their freedom to form a union to negotiate for wages and benefits.

It is good for my business to have satisfied workers who receive a decent wage and adequate health care, and it’s important to me that they feel they have a say in their workplace. What’s more, it helps businesses like mine when working families have enough buying power to provide for their families.

My associates work hard to provide excellent service to our customers, and they deserve to be treated fairly.

The Employee Free Choice Act is a fair and smart piece of legislation because it simplifies the process and puts the decision over whether to join a union in the hands of workers.

When a majority of workers sign up for union representation, companies should recognize their wish, and negotiate fairly.

This method has proven to be a win-win for me and my associates. Our labor relations are good, and that’s just good business.
