Letter: Resident hails Ascension chief
I agree with Sandra Thornhill, La. 42 does need to be fixed and has been needing to be fixed for a long time. Call your councilman/woman and/or Tommy Martinez and get the facts on this matter before judging.
This is not Tommy Martinez’ first time at being parish president; do a little research on his past terms, and you will realize what a great parish president he was and is.
During Martinez’s first term, all roads in Ascension Parish were improved and maintained. Mr. Martinez, being at one time employed with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, knows better than most what it takes to provide and maintain highways across the state.
He also knows what it takes to pay for such projects; getting funding from local, state and federal officials is not an easy task.
Also, The Advocate recently reported on how Mr. Martinez is trying to put on the ballots for the upcoming elections a tax that would be strictly for road improvements and future projects.
No, road improvements do not come free. We have to pay for them with taxes. They don’t just fall out of the sky. Money makes the world go around, or in this case straightens out the curves and gets the asphalt laid.
Tommy Martinez, at the end of his last term in office as our parish president, was working on the problem of La. 42 when he was voted out of office. The next parish president was not as focused or driven to continue the work of such projects.
If Mr. Martinez had been re-elected, we probably would have a much-needed exit between Highland Road and Prairieville Geismar from the interstate to La. 42, with improvements to that deadly road.
As for the A+ for their first six months in office, I as an Ascension Parish resident would agree with the grade given, considering the lack of knowledge and leadership of the past presidents running a parish and/or its government.
Ascension Parish is one of the fastest-growing in the state. We need someone representing us as a parish in a whole, not just within certain city limits. We need someone running this parish who’s in it for more than a ceremonial position or shaking hands, kissing babies in a long-term campaign of being re-elected.
We need someone who is ready to roll up his or her sleeves to get the job done.
