Letter: Alito vote showed Landrieu liberal

In case anyone is still unsure about the depth of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s liberal convictions, it’s instructive to remember her vote against the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Even the American Bar Association, not known for its conservative leanings, recognized Alito’s sterling credentials, and gave him a “well-qualified” rating, a virtual thumbs-up.

Landrieu’s opposition was based in part on    Alito’s well-known opinions denouncing the capricious use of race and gender quotas in hiring, promotion and college admissions, a constitutionally sound position and one favored by the majority of Americans.

Most fair-minded people think these  decisions should be merit-based, and Judge Alito agreed.

However, Landrieu, D-La., sided with U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and the leftist moveon.org in trashing the nomination of this brilliant and even-tempered jurist.

She ignored the wishes of her constituency, and demonstrated just how far she is outside of the value system of most Louisianians.
