Letter: Jindal hailed for pork-barrel vetoes

Hooray for Gov. Bobby Jindal vetoing $16 million in pork-barrel projects from the state operating budget.

I was appalled when I read the list of some of the projects that were being proposed in our operating budget. I can’t believe that some of our legislators had the nerve to even suggest that our tax money be spent on some of these outrageous “projects” that have nothing in the world to do with the operation of our government in an orderly and cost-efficient manner beneficial to the whole state and not just for some legislator to buy the votes of his or her constituents.

For the sake of brevity, I’ll use just one example. Who cares whether or not McKinley High School has an alumni association, except for Sen. Yvonne Dorsey, D-Baton Rouge, and Rep. Pat Smith, D-Baton Rouge? If they would have gotten that obscene pay raise, which they asked for, they could have pooled their money and sponsored it themselves. I applaud Gov. Jindal for vetoing that, too!

Furthermore, if the McKinley High alumni want an alumni association, then they could do like many other schools throughout this state and nation do, i.e., get some of their fellow alumni to cough up a few bucks apiece and start one.

I belong to my high school’s alumni association, and the annual dues are minimal and, in addition, my school’s alumni association puts on money-making projects throughout the year that help finance the association’s operations, plus give money to the school in order to help it to improve its operations.

Finally, shame on Yvonne Dorsey for calling our governor “asinine” and a “blatant liar.” He is one of the most honest and honorable persons to ever serve in our state government. By the way, he is only doing exactly what 600,000-plus voters of our state elected him to do.
