Readers' Views: It’s time to increase U.S. drilling

It is no secret that Americans are paying record prices for energy.

The days of filling the tank for $20 are long gone. High fuel costs have led to marked price increases for most of the goods and services we rely upon every day, and the American consumer is hurting.

We cannot, nor should we, any longer rely upon the OPEC nations for our energy needs. If things don’t change, prices will continue to climb, and our national security will continue to be threatened. It is time to take immediate action by beginning to tap into the vast reserves of oil that we possess in our own country.

There is a documented supply of two trillion barrels of American oil available that can be accessed in an environmentally safe manner off our coasts, in parts of Alaska, Colorado and in the upper Midwest. That is three times the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia.

In an attempt to get Congress to act in our interest on this, a “Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.” campaign has begun and has already reached more than 1 million of us who are tired of pumping billions of dollars into governments that, frankly, don’t like us very much.
I hope everyone will consider joining the push to get Congress to enact legislation that will finally make it legal to explore domestic drilling that will lead to lower prices at the pump and decreased dependence on oil from Venezuela and the Middle East.

More than 70 percent of us support this issue, but our representatives and senators need to hear from us. Not only will this strengthen our safety by decreasing our reliance on foreign oil, it will be a boost to our own employment base by paying hardworking Americans a high wage within our own energy industry.

There are those who have said the impact will not be significant and will take years to make an impact.
Nuts. There is no better worker than the American worker and no more innovative company than the American company. If we would have begun to explore America’s own energy options years ago, we would be producing American energy today.

While options such as nuclear, biofuels and conservation are an important part of a true national energy policy, we will continue to rely on fossil fuels for many years to come.

The bottom line is, we can buy American gasoline or Middle East gasoline. I know which one I prefer.
It’s time to “Drill here. Drill Now. Pay Less.”
