Letter: Voters will never forget pay raise
State Rep. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, was quoted as saying, “I think it’s a shame that this pay raise thing seems to have blottled out everybody’s memories as to what we did.”
Many of our representatives hope that we, the voters, will forget about the pay raise and focus on the positive contributions they made in this most recent legislative session.
In normal circumstances, the voters would forget about an unpopular bill getting passed, no matter how controversial. However, this bill will be different. Most controversial bills cause the constituents to be split in the middle. This bill, however, was opposed by nearly every citizen of Louisiana.
We elected our representatives to represent us, the people who voted them in office. In this instance, they completely turned their backs on Louisiana.
Would it have been so difficult for them to delay this bill so that Mr. Jim Tucker, the House speaker, R-Terrytown, could address the citizens and ease our concerns about this bill? Would it have been so difficult for them to delay the bill so that Gov. Bobby Jindal could address the people and tell us why we should allow them to pass the law and why he will allow them to pass the law?
Instead of listening to the people who gave them this job, they completely turned their backs on us. They have shown us that our opinions and our voices do not count in Louisiana politics. They have shown us that they care about themselves first and do not care about their constituents.
They are hoping we will forget about this. We, the citizens and voters of this great state, will not forget about this pay raise.
For those who do forget about this pay raise, we will remind them of when their representatives stabbed them in the back. We will remind them before every election, before every session and any time in between.
We, the citizens of Louisiana, will remember the day that our state representatives failed to represent us. We will never forget!
