Letter: Who cares about ‘Hair’ and hippies?

  • Published: May 13, 2008 - Page: 6B - UPDATED: 12:05 a.m.

All of the moaning and groaning over such nonsensical topics as a production of “Hair” leaves me with a distinct impression of being physically sick.

Who gives a you-know-what about what some hippies did or didn’t do because of some lame-brain stage production?

If a bunch of dubious types believe that something like that gave some sort of meaning to their lives, then that’s interesting, but it means nothing to anyone with a half a brain now so why try to push others to pretend to believe that it has genuine relevance?

I read an opinion letter in which some person claimed that “Hair” helped to end the Vietnam War.  All of you aging hippies, free lovers, social activists and other such social misfits should quietly just fade away. So give it a rest, will you, please?

"All of you aging hippies, free lovers, social activists and other such social misfits should quietly just fade away. So give it a rest, will you, please?" We'd be happy to, as long as the Jim Crow advocates, John Birch members, nosy Christians and other Baton Rouge-to-Metarie Republican types would give it a rest as well. We're simply tired of you sticking your noses in our lives and bedrooms.

I'm not a hippie and I love Hair. I wish I had gone to see the recent production at Swine Palace. I guess we're always going to have jerks like Mr. Wallace that just have to tell everyone how much they hate a certain segment of society. What a shame.

Hair, the original stage play in it's pure form, was an idea of it's time, now it's nostalgia.Sorry to burst your bubble Mr. Wallace, many "aging hippies",myself included, lean more to the conservative side,we have seen the consistant failure of many social programs introduced in our lifetime, there are no free lunches, somebody has to pay.Now what really scares me,guys with shaved heads and tatoos driving old pick up trucks, can we use that as a theme for a musical ?

I am not a hippie, I don't have long hair; I wasn't even alive in the 60's. I also did not go see Hair but I wanted to because I think my life is richer for seeing all kinds of perspectives. It's Gilbert and Sullivan and the hidden messages in Buttercup's songs that really worry me, if those ever get out who knows what damage could be done to society?
