Letter: Orleans school choice bills lauded
While making education their top priority, Sen. Ann Duplessis and Rep. Austin Badon have been guided by one principle: the needs of children supersede politics.
Partisan politics should not be allowed to destroy the educational hopes of children. The Legislature should respect the judgment of parents and give them the choice in one of the most crucial aspects of their children’s lives, education.
Parents, not the government, should have the authority to decide where their children go to school. A battle zone awaits Duplessis and Badon, both D-New Orleans, as they prepare for their bills to move to the House and Senate floors.
House Bill 1347 by Badon and Senate Bill 795 by Duplessis would enact a scholarship program for Orleans Parish that has the ability to help around 1,500 low-income children trapped in low-performing schools.
For the first time, these two bills are sponsored by two African-American legislators from Orleans Parish whose constituencies will be the beneficiaries of the program.
This bill takes NO MONEY or resources away from public education as its funding comes directly from the state’s general fund. It simply provides more opportunities for children to get a quality education.
As a registered Democrat, I applaud Sen. Duplessis’s and Rep. Badon’s efforts and call on others to aid in their mission. It only takes one well-educated child to break the cycle of poverty in a family.
Legislators, let’s stand up for children!
