OPINION

Letter: Musical flies in the face of Scripture

  • Published: May 8, 2008 - Page: 8B - UPDATED: 12:05 a.m.

What a sparkling review of “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” appeared in The Advocate, complete with color pictures and an upbeat review of the show and its quite able cast!

This popular musical production has played around the United States for years. Years ago it would have been looked down upon, and perhaps boycotted, because America was more biblically oriented than it is now.

Knowledge of the Bible is virtually totally lacking in the average Joe today, so he has no reason to know that Scripture says that sex — yes, wonderful sex — is a gift from God to us. And that God set clear boundaries around sex.

In particular, sex is to be limited to husband and wife in order to be a “show and tell” of what an intimate relationship God wants with his creatures — and monogamous marriage is to be a picture of that future bliss between man and God.

Plays such as this bawdy one, although popularly considered harmless and fun, fly in the face of the very high posture Scripture gives to marriage and sex.

Times change.

Your opinion, Bert, don't push it down my throat. Don't see the play and don't sleep around, if that's your taste, but, if it's a "popular musical" must be a reason. Personally, marriage and sex are two different things with a little bit of overlap here and there.

“If a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod and he dies at his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives a day or two (before dying), no vengeance shall be taken; for the slave is his master’s money.” (Ex. 21:20-21). "As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church." In Numbers 31:14-18 we find: "Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle. "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man." "And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about." (1 Kings, 7:23) Pi is equal to three! Damsel snatching is OK! The Equal Rights Amendment is anti-Christian.!You are right, knowledge of the Bible is totally lacking. Teach the controversy!

If you want a society ruled by religion, move to Saudi Arabia. Otherwise, don't support the performance. Why do so many Christians have to stick their nose into everything?

Interesting. But off the mark, if you really knew the play you would know it is about shutting down a "House of Ill Repute". Your opinion is yours and thank goodness is not shared by everyone. Oh I know, there are those that do share your viewpoint and that is fine also as that is what makes our country so wonderful.. But what also makes our country so wonderful is that not everyone shares your viewpoint as the show has mostly sold out despite a rather tepid review and from what I have heard the vast majority of those who have seen the show have enjoyed it a great deal. It has always been my opinion that if you want to comment on something you should do so from an informed point of view! See a show and then if you feel the need, thats when you comment. Thank you Baton Rouge Little Theater for continuing to produce such entertaining shows! Keep up the good work!

Everything this man has written is, in my opinion, complimentary of the play. This isn't vacation Bible school, nor is it the dark ages. If this were the 1950's, I'm sure Mr. Robinson would be railing against the evils of rock and roll music.

I liked it very much too - although the padding in the auditorium seat was a bit thin, so I had to wear a diaper to really enjoy it.

Other than that, Bert, how did you enjoy the show? I found that it really stretched my horizons, among other things.

I don't know. I was not impressed with the restrooms, but I thought the play was pretty cool.

I guess I'm just resigned to enjoying this sort of thing, but I really liked the play.
