Letter: Radar detector proposal questioned

  • Published: Apr 2, 2008 - Page: 6B - UPDATED: 12:05 a.m.

I listened with great interest to the report that Sen. Don Cravins Jr., D-Opelousas, is pushing a statewide ban on radar detectors.

I wonder if his efforts have anything to do with his area having the only speed trap on Interstate 49 between Lafayette and Alexandria?

As a frequent traveler (and radar detector user) in his area, I know the location well. It appears that local sheriff’s deputies are always parked in the same location, running radar on northbound traffic near the Lebeau exit.

I’m certain that the good senator, as well as the local sheriff, would consider the trap more safety-related than an economic boost to the community.

I would tend to disagree.

I believe that if it were a safety effort, the deputies would be displaying a presence by patrolling the interstate, and thereby slowing down all traffic, rather than hiding with radar to catch the random driver.
