Letter: Cancer survivor commends Jindal
I am writing to commend Gov. Bobby Jindal for recognizing the burden of cancer on Louisiana.
He knows that we lead the nation in cancer mortality. He knows how it impacts families. And he knows how to help solve the problem — through prevention and detection.
I was 36 years old when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer. I had been married to a wonderful woman for 16 years with two very loving daughters. That was 1‰ years ago, and with the help of research, treatments, support from family and the almighty GOD I am currently cancer free.
And, with the assistance of research, we now know that my oldest daughter will never have to hear the words “you have colon cancer.” She was diagnosed with a disorder that gave her a 100 percent chance of getting colon cancer before she reached the age of 30. But because of research and advances in medical science, doctors have been able to prevent that from happening.
Our governor’s remarks about fighting cancer were inspiring. Hopefully, as we recognize March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, these remarks will translate into much-needed action.
As an example, Texas has responded with $3 billion to fight cancer. How will we show our commitment?
